Welcome to the Research Library.
The Library contains selected research abstracts for FMS and ME/CFS. PubMed sometimes has a link to the full paper. If an abstract is of particular interest to you, check PubMed to see if there is a link to the full paper. The easiest way to do a PubMed search is using the NLM Citation number, but you can do a search using the author's name or by illness. PubMed
Research results have become confusing because results are in part dependent upon the criteria used to select patient groups. Much of the research has used the Fukuda 1994 criteria. However, most studies for Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Graded Exercise Therapy (GET) used the Oxford criteria of prolonged fatigue. The Reeves (2005) criteria for CFS/ME are not specific for symptoms of ME/CFS and select a patient group more than 5 times larger than the accepted epidemiological studies. This indicates that less than 20% of patients selected using the Reeves criteria have ME/CFS. Therefore, any research finding on patients selected with the Reeves criteria probably do not apply to most ME/CFS patients. The "Canadian criteria" are more restrictive than the Fukuda, Oxford and Reeves criteria. Jason, et al indicates that the "Canadian criteria" are better at preventing primary psychiatric patients from meeting the criteria. Check to see what criteria are used in a study that is of interest.
Note: Emphasis in abstracts has been added.
